Volume 123
THE PERSON IN THE SHADOWS FROM THE STORY OF THE PRODIGAL.
Luke 15:7
And when he came to himself he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
In the gospel of Luke chapter 15 we find the tragedy of lostness.
This chapter could be effortlessly outlined like this:
I. THE LOST SHEEP. (verses 1-7)
II. THE LOST SHEKEL. (verses 8-10)
III. THE LOST SON. (verses 11-32)
It is while the physician Luke is dealing (under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with "The Lost Son" that a person is wonderfully introduced to an unnoticed individual in this powerful narrative. (verse 17)
While preachers have devoted and delivered countless messages (and rightfully so) on "The Prodigal Son", "The Father" and "The Elder Brother", someone needs to call the church's attention to "The Servant". He is mentioned four times within the space of twenty-two verses. (verses 17, 19, 22 and 26)
Friend, you and I (those of us that are saved) need to discover the other cast member that performs on the stage of "The Lost Son"!
There are three considerable characteristics of a "Father's servant": (All found in Luke 15).
I. THEIR PROVISION.
A major attribute of a "Father's servant" is their provision. (verse 17) Even far from God backsliders know that Heaven fills the pantry of those who function for Heaven! The deli sandwiches are much thicker and tastier at "The Father's House" than they are at "The Far Country"! (Psalm 37:25) Their provision!
II. THEIR PROJECT.
A major attribute of a "Father's servant" is their project. (verse 22) You find genuine "servants" running back and forth from papa to the prodigal. No one ever got a robe, a ring or a pair of regal shoes until a Father's footman showed up on the scene. (Luke 10:33) Their project!
III. THEIR PERCEPTION.
A major attribute of a "Father's servant" is their perception. (verses 26 & 27) When a christian is labouring for God they are certain to have the low down of what's taking place at the "Father's House". If you want to know what's going on in the church, don't ask "CNN", "Fox News", "ABC", "CBS", "NBC" or "ESPN", just ask a "Father's servant'. (Daniel 4:9) Their perception!
