WHY THE GREAT APOSTLE PAUL DIDN'T WANT TO BECOME A "CASTAWAY!"
I Corinthians 9:27b
lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
In the book of I Corinthians chapter 9 we find christian liberty regarding service for Christ.
This chapter could be effortlessly outlined like this:
I. Christian Liberty And Paul's Approach. (verses 1-23)
II. Christian Liberty And Paul's Appeal. (verses 24-27)
It is while the apostle Paul is dealing (under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with "Christian Liberty And Paul's Appeal" that a person reads the heart-cry of a considerable servant of God who did not want to be pulled from the "game" and permanently put on the "bench!" (verse 27b)
The word "castaway" in the Greek language means: disapproved or disqualified.
C.I. Scofield once wrote about our text: "The apostle is writing of service, not of salvation."
Friend, you and I (those of us that are in the service for our Saviour) should be just like the apostle of the Gentiles and not want to end up "disapproved" by deity!
There are three things that sadly happen when a saint becomes a "castaway" (All found in I Corinthians 9)
I. YOU LOSE YOUR PULPIT.
A thing that sadly happens when a christian becomes a "castaway" is they lose their pulpit. (verse 16) There is not a church or for that matter a crowd of penguins that wants to hear a sermon, homily, devotion or even a ladies Bible study from "Rev. Disapproved"! It is only by how one walks that they will ever get another person's ear. (II Corinthians 3:2) Castaways will lose their pulpits!
II. YOU LOSE YOUR PERSUASION.
A thing that sadly happens when a christian becomes a "castaway" is they lose their persuasion. (verse 22) Those who have lost their influence are sadly mistaken if they think that they will ever get a single soul to Calvary in their present condition. The classic Bible example of this unchanging truth is Brother Lot. (Please read Genesis 19:12-14) Castaways will lose their persuasion!
III. YOU LOSE YOUR PRIZE.
A thing that sadly happens when a christian becomes a "castaway" is they lose their prize. (verse 24) Mark it down, crowns and commendations in Glory will never be given to those who wiped-out or washed out on God! What a tragedy it would be to live your christian life for decades and then just before the "finish line" drop-out and "lose" all that you had won in rewards! (II John 8) Castaways will lose their prize!
