"BUT PRAYER"
Acts 12:5
Peter therefore was kept in prison; but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
In the book of Acts chapter 12 we find the Apostle Peter's release from prison.
This chapter could effortlessly be outlined like this:
I. The Unforgivable Slaying. (verses 1-4)
II. The Unforgotten Simon. (verses 5-11)
III. The Unbelieving Supplicants. (verses 12-17)
IV. The Unlovely Sight. (verses 18-23)
V. The Undaunted Saints. (verses 24-25)
It is while the physician Luke is dealing (under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with "The Unforgotten Simon" that a person reads one of the most encouraging two coupled words on the pages of the Bible. (verse 5)
The word "but" means: with the exception of. The word "prayer" means: speech to God.
Friend, you and I need to be strengthened by the great possibility of supplication!
There are three common things the Christian can conquer by this considerable truth:
I. LITTLE SUPPLIES.
A common thing the Christian can conquer by this considerable truth is little supplies. (John 6:11) There is in this narrative a golden nugget a person must not miss, no one gets MORE from God until they are thankful for what they already HAVE from God! If somewhere between my 'need' and Heaven's grocery store there is supplication, I will push home a full and paid for grocery cart. (Psalm 81:10) Little Supplies!
II. LOST SINNERS.
A common thing the Christian can conquer by this considerable truth is lost sinners. (Romans 10:1) The sad reason the Christian and the church doesn't see sinners saved like they once did, is because they have not been to the 'prayer closet' or to the 'prayer meeting'. (Jeremiah 33:3) New-flash: when nothing is happening, nobody is praying! Lost Sinners!
III. LARGE STORMS.
A common thing the Christian can conquer by this considerable truth is large storms. (Mark 4:37) Just as the tempest tossed ship sends out a distress signal, the tempted and troubled saint sends up a distress signal. You can make it through spiritual 'hurricanes' if you talk to the One who holds the leash on the weather. (Matthew 8:27) Large Storms!
