LET'S GO FISHING!
Matthew 4:19
And he saith unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
In the gospel of Matthew chapter 4 we find the Lord Jesus Christ calls four fishermen.
This chapter could be effortlessly outlined like this:
I. The Increasing Danger. (verses 1-11)
II. The Important Decision. (verses 12-17)
III. The Invitation To Discipleship. (verses 18-22)
IV. The Inspiring Development. (verses 23-25)
It is while the apostle Matthew is dealing (under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with "An Invitation to Discipleship" that a person views one of the most heart-stirring scenes in the Holy Scriptures. (verse 19)
D.L. Moody once said about our text: "If you would be fishers of men, you must leave your old nets."
Friend, you and I (those of us that are saved) should make fishing foremost!
There are three expressions I have heard experienced fishermen make that are also excellent for evangelism:
I. "BRING THE RIGHT BAIT!"
A statement an angler makes that is also awesome for soulwinning is, "Bring the right bait". (I Peter 1:28) Common sense tells a person you cannot catch fish by throwing deer feed on top of the water. That's why these co-called churches are WRONG who use "Praise Teams", "Movie Theater-Like Buildings" and "Relevant Talks!" It may bring a lot of 'fish' around but none of them are eating the 'deer feed'. Fundamental 'hooks', 'nets', and 'bait' will still catch a boat load of fish. (John 21:6) "Bring the right bait!"
II. "YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE BIG ONE I BROUGHT IN LAST SUMMER!"
A statement an angler makes that is also awesome for soulwinning is, "You should have seen the big one I brought in last summer!" (Psalm 2:8) Nothing will push a church towards personal evangelism like promoting what God has done in a poor sinner's heart. The early church didn't have a problem getting Christians 'on board' in regards to soulwinning after Saul was saved! (Acts 9:31) "You should have seen the big one I brought in last summer!"
III. "GET EM INTO THE BOAT!"
A statement an angler makes that is also awesome for soulwinning is, "Get em into the boat!" (Mark 16:15) A fundamental church is like most boats I have ever had any experience with, you always end up getting wet before you ever get in all the way! A sadly neglected part of the "Great Commission" is, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." That can only be done in the 'ship' of a local church. (Matthew 28:20) "Get em into the boat!"
